City Theatrical DMXcat™ Multi Function Test Tool
City Theatrical‘s DMXcat™ system is designed for use by the lighting professional who is involved with the planning, installation, operation, or maintenance of theatrical and studio lighting equipment. The system consists of a small hardware interface device and a suite of mobile applications. Together, they combine to bring DMX/RDM control plus several other functionalities to the user’s smartphone for use wherever and whenever they are needed. Developed with input from designers and technicians, the DMXcat will be an indispensible tool for lighting users. The DMXcat will operate with both Android and IPhones.
Hardware
The DMXcat’s interface device is a compact battery powered unit which fits easily in a pocket or tool pouch or may be worn on a belt. It uses Bluetooth LE technology for communication with the smartphone/applications (up to 35’ range). Without the limitations of being physically connected, the user can move about the workspace as needed with his/her smartphone and run the various apps while still using the phone for on-the-job communication. The device’s 5 pin XLRF connector/cable asembly allows it to be connected to a point in a DMX data chain to allow testing and or control of the various DMX/RDM channel functions. It is charged using a standard USB to Micro-USB cable and charger.
Other features include a built-in LED flashlight, an audible alarm (for locating a misplaced unit), an LED Status indicator, XLR5M to XLR5M adapter and a removable belt clip.
Optional accessories include: XLR5M to RJ45 Adapter, XLR5M to XLR3F Adapter, XLR5M to XLR5M Turnaround, XLR5M to XLR3M Turnaround, Belt Pouch.
Software Applications
There are currently seven apps available or in development for use with the DMXcat system. Apps are available through Google Play (Android) or the Appstore (IPhone).
DMXcat® now offers Multi Fixture, a feature that helps users group and control multiple lighting fixtures to save time and improve workflows. It also allows users to assign numbers to channels or fixtures, to create consistent and simplified numbering systems across various teams working on a project. DMXcat users can use it to save and re-load setups across various rigs, for future use.
Apps Included with the Basic configuration include:

This app simplifies the configuring of DIP switches used for setting DMX addresses.

Useful for setting light levels for on-camera use.

Well, yes, that's a really cool gadget.
Used it a few times now and found it to be much more convenient than the "cheese brick" i've used up to now.
And it's wireless, so i can check installed fixtures wthout that one meter of cable missing to go to that single far away unit ... :-D
Haven't checked it yet with the DMX cat, but my previous tester had issues with driving lines of more than 15, 20 metres with multiple fixtures ... even if - according to DMX specs - there's not too many load units connected, it tends to produce irregular effects on some of the appliances.
There are projects coming up which will allow me to check that ... so i might update this review (if possible).
The fifth star is missing due to the "not completely intuitive" Apps ...
I had to consult the manual to find out how to delete a stored preset ... or a stored fixture personality.
Also i would like to have the switching between "sliders" and "keypad" on those pages of the app, so i don't have to leave, change, go back ... and start from zero.
I am using both systems and i'd like to switch between them.
Also i'd like the "fader page" tilt by 90 dgrees and be scrollable up and down, so i can seamlessly scroll ... even if it's a block that extends 8 channels. Channel number on the left, followed by horizontal fader from 0 .. 255 on the right end.
That would suit at least smart phones much better than scrolling by page.
Also if i tilt my phone to landscape, my faders are going "up" and "down", scrolling would be horizontal, but "seamless".
Just like on a "regular" (computerized) Desk.
Similar thought about the "wheels pages" in fixture controller: I'd like them horizontal and the page scroll vertical in steps of one.
there are a lot of fixtures that have more than 6 channels ... and sometimes you want to use slider 5 to 9 or so ... ;-)
It may be just me, but i have no problems with pushing a slider or wheel horizontally instead of vertically, even in one-hand-mode.

Der DMXcat selber ist ein super geniales Gerät. Die Apps dazu sind auch schon echt gut, aber eine Export- und Importfunktion wäre noch super, genauso wie den Patch auch ohne Verbindung zum Internet bzw. mit Verwendung einer Offline Datenbank ohne Verbindung zum DMXcat wäre noch super.
Leider hat mich aber der mitgelieferte DMX Genderchanger M->M enttäuscht, da im Gegensatz zur Abbildung auf der Herstellerseite kein Neutrikgenderchanger, sondern ein eher günstig und tendenziell schlecht verarbeitetes Chinamodell beigelegt ist. Das finde ich bei der Preisklasse dann schade!

am Monday, October 14 2019Bisher bin ich sehr zufrieden. Nur die erste Einrichtung ist etwas schwierig. Danach läuft es aber sehr stabil. Ein Kritikpunkt ist das ich für die die Fixture List immer eine aktive Internetverbindung brauche. Das fänd ich besser wenn es auf dem Gerät gespeichert wäre. Auch fände ich es besser wenn der Anschluss als Einbaubuchse ausgeführt wäre.

Ein Super DMX-Tool. Hält absolut was es verspricht.
Dadurch, dass es immer im Toolcase mitfährt, nutze ich es deutlich öfter als ich es eigentlich bräuchte. Man wird ja irgendwann auf kreativ geschickte Weise faul, wenn die technischen Möglichkeiten da sind.
Nicht nur bei Fehlern im Rigg oder zum Checken von fertig gebauten Systemen, auch beim Preppen eine super Hilfe.
Ich Addressiere z.B. P5'en und ähnliche Scheinwerfer nur noch Kistenweise ohne die Lampen rausheben zu müssen. Das geht unfassbar schnell. Tipp: In der Mehrfach-Auswahl von Fixtures ein bisschen versteckt kann man auch einfach alle Geräte auf Werkseinstellungen setzen.
Der einzige Knackpunkt an der Sache: Man braucht halt ein Smartphone oder Tablet dabei und um mit Fixtures zu arbeiten entsprechend auch Internetzugang. Ich hatte tatsächlich noch nicht den Fall, dass das zu einem Problem wurde, obwohl einige Venues wirklich schlechtes Netz haben. Aber das ist auf jeden Fall gut zu wissen.
